Environmental Biology: Calicut University Free Study Material

    Welcome to the first lesson of second semester Bsc. Zoology Calicut University. Today we will go through Module 1 Unit 1 :  Introduction, Ecosystem & Energetics. 

Why This Module is Important? 

   Environment biology is not just about pollution and climate change. It is about understanding how life survives on Earth. Every organism, from bacteria to humans depends on a complex interaction between living and non-living components of the environment.

In this unit, we study the foundational concepts of Environmental Science, including biosphere, ecosystem, habitat, environment, and ecology. These concepts form the base for understanding energy flow, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity in later units.

What You Will Learn in Module 1 Unit 1 : 

🌱 Environmental Science vs Environmental Studies

Students often use the terms Environmental Science and Environmental Studies interchangeably, but they are not the same. Although both deal with the environment, their focus and approach are different.

Environmental Science is the scientific study of the natural and artificial environment in relation to living organisms. It teaches how ecosystems function by applying principles from biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and atmospheric science. The subject is purely analytical and research-based. It understands how energy flows through ecosystems, how nutrients cycle happens between organisms and their surroundings, and how biotic and abiotic components interact to maintain ecological balance. Environmental Science provides the theoretical and scientific foundation needed to understand environmental systems.

Environmental Studies is more issue-oriented. It concentrates on environmental problems and their solutions. Topics such as pollution, climate change, deforestation, biodiversity loss, and sustainable resource management are key to this field. Environmental Studies often includes social, economic, legal, and political perspectives because solving environmental issues requires policy-making and public awareness in addition to scientific knowledge.

In simple terms, Environmental Science explains how nature works, while Environmental Studies focuses on what is going wrong and how to fix it. Understanding this is important, as questions comparing these two terms are often asked in university examinations.

🌎 What is Biosphere?

Earth is the only known planet that supports life. The region where life exists is called as biosphere. It is divided into 4 major components: the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and cryosphere. 

Lithosphere is the solid outer crust of the Earth, it includes continents, islands, and ocean floor.

Hydrosphere includes all the water bodies such as oceans, rivers, lakes, and groundwater.

Atmosphere is the layer of gases surrounding the Earth, it protects life from harmful radiation and also regulates the temperature balance.

Cryosphere includes all the frozen water such as glaciers, ice caps, and polar regions.

🌳 What is an Ecosystem?

Ecosystem is a structural functional unit where living organisms interact with non-living components of the environment. It consist of  Biotic components (plants, animals, microbes) and Abiotic components (soil, water, temperature, sunlight etc...)

An ecosystem is self sustaining because energy flows through it and nutrients are recycled within it. Ecosystems can be differentiated into terrestrial ecosystem, freshwater ecosystem, and marine ecosystem. Each ecosystem differs in energy flow, species diversity, and environmental conditions.

🏠 What is Habitat?

A habitat is a specific place where an organism lives. The habitat provides with food, shelter, and a space for reproduction. For example: A pond is a habitat for frogs. A tree bark may serve as habitat for insects.

🌍 What is Environment?

The environment is the sum total of all living and non-living elements, it is divided into abiotic environment and biotic environment 

🌿 What is Ecology?

Ecology is the scientific study of interactions between organisms and their environment. The term “ecology” was introduced in 1866 by the German biologist Ernst Haeckel. Ecology can be integrated with Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Agriculture, and Medicinal Science. 

🌿 Subdivisions of Ecology

Ecology is divided into three major branches:

Autecology:  studies individual species in relation to their environment. Example: Studying how a cactus survives in desert conditions.

Synecology: studies group of organisms or communities within an ecosystem. Example: Interaction between plants and herbivores, Predator-prey interaction.

Habitat Ecology: studies the effect of specific habitats on organisms.

This unit forms the base for understanding:

• Energy flow in ecosystems
• Food chains and food webs
• Biogeochemical cycles
• Population ecology
• Conservation biology
